The debut trailer for *Predator: Badlands* has ignited a flurry of curiosity among fans, particularly about the design of the new Predator, Dek. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, director Dan Trachtenberg shared intriguing details about the film and the unique approach to the iconic sci-fi hunter.
Dek, portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, is a Yautja “runt” who takes on the protagonist role, a departure from the traditional antagonist portrayal of Yautja in previous Predator films. This underdog character sets out to prove himself on a “Death Planet” named Kalisk, aiming to earn his father's approval and acceptance within his clan.
Dek’s design diverges from previous Predators, appearing more human-like and smaller in stature, which aligns with his "runt" status. The narrative of *Predator: Badlands* centers on Dek's journey, but he is not alone on Kalisk. He collaborates with a character played by Elle Fanning, who sports the Weyland Yutani logo on her eyes, sparking speculation about her being a synth from the Alien universe.
Trachtenberg drew inspiration from the 2005 PlayStation game *Shadow of the Colossus* for the dynamic between Dek and Fanning's character. He highlighted the emotional connection and contrast between the two, noting Dek's laconic nature against Fanning's more expressive and capable persona. While tight-lipped on the specifics of Fanning's character, Trachtenberg teased a unique hook that enhances their on-screen pairing.
*Predator: Badlands* is set to premiere on November 7, 2025. Before that, fans can look forward to Trachtenberg's animated anthology, *Predator: Killer of Killers*, which will be released in June.
