While eagerly awaiting the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages, many players are revisiting the classic DOOM and DOOM II. The developers have recently resumed work on these titles, delivering a significant update.
This update significantly improves the technical aspects of DOOM and DOOM II, but the enhancements extend beyond mere technical fixes. Crucially, support for multiplayer modifications has been added. For compatibility, mods must be created using Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21, or BOOM. Cooperative play now allows all players to collect items, and a spectator mode has been introduced for players awaiting revival. Multiplayer network code has also been optimized. Finally, the mod loader can now handle more than the initial 100+ subscribed mods.
Looking ahead to DOOM: The Dark Ages, accessibility is a key focus. Players will have extensive customization options, exceeding those found in previous id Software titles. Executive producer Marty Stratton emphasizes the game's accessibility, highlighting the ability to adjust enemy aggression in the settings.
Further customization options allow players to modify enemy damage and difficulty, projectile speed and damage, and other parameters such as game tempo, aggression levels, and parry timing. Stratton also confirms that prior experience with the DOOM franchise isn't required to understand the narratives in DOOM: The Dark Ages and DOOM: Eternal.
