Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has announced the much-anticipated update 1.1.1, arriving at a critical juncture for the recently released strategy game. On Steam, Civilization 7 currently lags behind its predecessors in player engagement, with a 24-hour peak of 16,921 concurrent players, falling short of the top 100 most-played games. In contrast, Civilization 5, despite being 15 years old, boasts a peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, released in 2016, enjoys a significantly higher peak of 40,676 players, indicating that many fans are sticking with the older titles.
In a detailed Steam post, Firaxis outlined the upcoming "additions and refinements" in Update 1.1.1, including:
- Quick Move Functionality
- New Natural Wonder Mount Everest
- Additional UI Updates & Polish
- Settlement & Commander Renaming
- And more!
Lead designer Ed Beach provided an in-depth look at these changes in a video, directing players to the full patch notes, which are expected to be released soon.
Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:
----------------------------------------The Quick Move feature is now an optional setting you can toggle on in the game's menu, allowing units to move to their destinations instantly for a faster gameplay experience.
A significant update to map generation includes a new start position option. For single-player games, the default setting is now Standard, offering more varied and less predictable continents similar to Civilization 6. Multiplayer games retain the Balanced setting to ensure a level playing field with consistent maps.
Players can now rename settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their game. Additionally, restarting the game with a single click allows you to find the perfect first settlement, recreating the map with new seeds while keeping your chosen leader and civilization.
UI improvements include a city and town panel that remains open during purchases, new notifications for cities under attack, indicators for crises, and enhanced resource tooltips. The update also introduces significant pacing changes to enhance gameplay flow.
Alongside these updates, the paid Crossroads of the World Collection introduces new civilizations Bulgaria and Nepal, and a new leader, Simón Bolívar, available as of March 25.

Civilization 7 has stirred controversy among series veterans due to its new mechanics and has struggled to gain traction on Steam, where it holds a 'mixed' user review rating and a 7/10 score from IGN. In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but remains optimistic, stating that the "legacy Civ audience" will warm up to the game over time.
