Chris Evans Confirms No Return to MCU for Avengers

by Gabriel Apr 02,2025

Chris Evans, known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly debunked rumors about his return to the franchise in the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other MCU projects. In an interview with Esquire, Evans dismissed a report by Deadline that suggested he would be reprising his role alongside fellow original Avenger Robert Downey Jr., stating emphatically that the claim was "not true."

The speculation about Evans' return arose after Anthony Mackie, who assumed the Captain America mantle following Evans' departure in "Avengers: Endgame," shared with Esquire that he had been informed by his manager of Evans' potential return. However, Mackie clarified that he had spoken directly to Evans, who told him, "Oh, you know, I’m happily retired." This directly contradicts the earlier reports and rumors.

Evans has, however, made a cameo as his former Fox character Johnny Storm in "Deadpool & Wolverine," though this was a lighter, comedic role and not a return to his iconic Captain America character.

The MCU itself faces uncertainty, particularly following the departure of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror. Majors was set to be the new central antagonist akin to Thanos but was removed from the franchise after being found guilty of assault and harassment. In response, Marvel has announced that Doctor Doom will take over as the new big bad, with Robert Downey Jr., best known as Iron Man, stepping into the role. This shift fueled speculation about the return of other original Avengers, though no further confirmations have been made.

In other MCU developments, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, confirmed he will not be part of "Avengers: Doomsday" but will have a "central role" in its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The Russo Brothers, who previously directed several Avengers films, are set to helm "Secret Wars," which is expected to further explore the multiverse narrative, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also reportedly slated to appear.
