Call of Duty Cheat Developer Claims Shutdown, Players Doubtful

by Elijah Jun 24,2025

Call of Duty cheat provider, Phantom Overlay, is reportedly shutting down.

In a statement shared via Telegram, the provider did not specify the exact reason for its sudden closure, but clarified: "This is not an exit scam and no external party could ever force me to betray my customers. I will ensure everything remains updated, secure, and accessible for 32 more days."

The decision to remain operational for 32 days ensures that users who purchased 30-day keys receive their full value. Additionally, partial refunds will be offered for lifetime key holders.

Notably, several other cheating services rely on Phantom Overlay's infrastructure, meaning this unexpected shutdown may ripple through the broader cheating ecosystem.

One gamer expressed shock on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "I can't believe it!! Does this mean the Season 3 cheat update is actually going to work?" (h/t Dexerto).

However, not everyone was convinced by the move. Another user commented, "They're just rebranding. They operate the same backend under multiple names. The cheating won’t stop."

Activision recently acknowledged that its anti-cheat measures in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 “did not meet expectations” at the start of Season 1, particularly in Ranked Play, despite earlier promises to ban cheaters within one hour of their first match.

Still, the company stated it has significantly improved its Ricochet Anti-Cheat systems, leading to faster detection and removal of cheaters, including over 19,000 accounts recently banned.

Many players argue that widespread cheating is harming competitive gameplay, and Activision faced heavy criticism for its slow response. Matters escalated so much that with Season 2’s release, console players in Ranked modes were given the option to disable crossplay with PC players.

Cheating isn’t exclusive to Call of Duty, but it has become a growing concern since the launch of the free-to-play battle royale title, Warzone, in 2020. Despite investing heavily in anti-cheat development and legal action against cheat developers—with several recent high-profile wins—many fans still doubt the effectiveness of the Ricochet system.

In related news, we previously reported that more details regarding the return of Call of Duty Warzone’s iconic Verdansk map are expected on March 10.
