10 LitRPG Books I Recommend You Start Reading in 2025

by Owen Apr 15,2025

Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. While I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, nothing quite compares to immersing myself in a captivating book series. My love for reading was sparked by the Harry Potter series and has since expanded into various genres such as sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and even non-fiction. However, it was the LitRPG genre that truly captured my heart and became my primary reading focus. If you're eager to explore the exciting world of LitRPG, here are my top recommendations.

Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters

23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleOne of the great advantages of the books I've listed is that they are all accessible with a Kindle Unlimited subscription, which can save you money, especially given the extensive nature of some of these series. If you prefer audiobooks, each title is also available through an Audible subscription.

What Is LitRPG?

For newcomers to the genre, LitRPG, short for literary role-playing game, incorporates elements reminiscent of video game mechanics within its narratives. While some stories involve characters being transported into a game-like world, the genre's scope is broader. Each book featured here includes a leveling system and a power hierarchy that the protagonist navigates through experience. This list encompasses both LitRPG and progression fantasy, genres that offer a similar immersive experience.

  1. He Who Fights with Monsters

Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters

95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"He Who Fights with Monsters" is a thrilling, action-packed series with some of the wittiest lines I've encountered. Its unique universe and engaging characters make it a must-read for fantasy comedy enthusiasts. This is my top LitRPG pick, and each new volume maintains the high quality of the first.

The story follows Jason Asano, who awakens in a magical world within a hedge maze, endowed with new powers and a bald head. His quirky and resilient approach to his new reality enables him to tackle cannibals, monsters, and even complex personal relationships with surprising ease. Jason's morally complex character adds depth and keeps readers hooked throughout the series, which is now on its 11th book with more to come from author Shirtaloon.

  1. The Path of Ascension

### The Path of Ascension

33Book 1 of 8See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"The Path of Ascension" diverges from traditional LitRPG by not transporting its protagonist to another world. Instead, it offers a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals known as rifts and powerful immortals with unique talents.

The narrative follows Matt, a young orphan driven by the dream of exploring rifts and avenging his parents' deaths. However, his dreams are shattered when he discovers his low-tier talent. Matt's journey is one of overcoming adversity through hard work and determination, making this series stand out. The character development in books two and three solidified this series as a personal favorite.

  1. Dungeon Crawler Carl

### Dungeon Crawler Carl

74Book 1 of 7See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"Dungeon Crawler Carl" is an exhilarating series that maintains a brisk pace throughout. It features a refreshing protagonist and introduces readers to Princess Donut, a cat who arguably steals the show. This series is a standout in the LitRPG genre.

The story revolves around Carl, who finds himself trapped with his ex-girlfriend's cat when the apocalypse hits. They are thrust into an underground dungeon that serves as an intergalactic game show, managed by advanced alien races and a chaotic AI. The series offers humor, action, and skill progression, with the seventh book released in 2024 maintaining the excitement of the first. Author Matt Dinniman's other works are also well worth exploring.

  1. Unsouled (Cradle Series)

### Unsouled (Cradle Series)

32Book 1 of 12See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleSimilar to "The Path of Ascension," the Cradle series immerses readers in a detailed, existing world rather than transporting the protagonist elsewhere. With its unique power cultivation system and compelling protagonist, "Unsouled" is an excellent choice for fantasy lovers exploring LitRPG.

The story centers on Lindon, born as an "Unsouled" with seemingly no path to power. Despite his intelligence and determination, he faces a bleak future until divine intervention offers him a chance. The series spans 12 books and concludes satisfyingly. Will Wight's other works are also highly recommended.

  1. Beware of Chicken

### Beware of Chicken

30Book 1 of 4See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"Beware of Chicken" stands out on this list by offering a unique twist on the genre. Instead of action and adventure, it follows a protagonist who chooses farming over the path to power.

The narrative focuses on Jin Rou, a cultivator seeking to defy the heavens through martial arts. After his death, a man from Earth inhabits his consciousness and decides to abandon the cultivator's life for the tranquility of farming. In this pursuit, Jin Rou discovers friendship, family, and an unexpected source of power. This series is perfect for those seeking a relaxing yet fulfilling LitRPG read.

  1. Defiance of the Fall

### Defiance of the Fall

36Book 1 of 15See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleAs the longest series on my list, "Defiance of the Fall" is a commitment that pays off with its engaging narrative. The series kicks off with an exciting start and maintains its momentum as the protagonist faces continuous challenges.

The story follows Zachary Atwood, who finds himself alone when Earth integrates into the multiverse. Confronted by a new "System" with quests and notifications, Zac must survive an invasion with just a hatchet and luck. His journey to reunite with his family unveils the mysteries of the multiverse. With 14 books released and a 15th on the way, the series offers a deep dive into a unique leveling system and skill progression.

  1. Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

30Book 1 of 5See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Arcane Ascension series foregoes traditional stat sheets and complex leveling systems for a world governed by god-like beings who grant "attunements" through challenging dungeon-like spires. The intricate magic system is both fascinating and rewarding to explore alongside the protagonist.

The story, narrated in the first person, follows Corin Cadence as he seeks to uncover the fate of his brother lost in the Serpent Spire. Facing trials and forming new friendships at Lorian Heights Academy, Corin's journey is captivating. "Sufficiently Advanced Magic" was my gateway into LitRPG, offering a magic school setting reminiscent of Harry Potter. Author Andrew Rowe's companion series further enrich the narrative.

  1. The Grand Game

### The Grand Game

15Book 1 of 9See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"The Grand Game" appeals to fans of stealth games with its unique take on the genre. The protagonist, an assassin type, navigates challenges through cunning and stealth.

The series follows Michael, who awakens in the Forever Kingdom with no memory beyond his name. Among other newcomers, he must survive and advance through a dungeon of monsters. As he gains levels and skills, Michael uncovers the workings of the world governed by the Powers and his place within the Grand Game. With seven books out and two more on preorder, this series offers a fresh perspective on LitRPG.

  1. The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

30Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleFor those new to LitRPG, "The Completionist Chronicles" serve as an excellent starting point. The series incorporates familiar RPG elements with unique twists that keep readers engaged.

The story centers on Joe, an ex-military medic now confined to a wheelchair, who enters a virtual MMORPG to start anew. His unique situation leads him to become a Ritualist, navigating quests to level his magic and skills. The series evolves, exploring different worlds in later books, making it a fun and dynamic read.

  1. Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Underworld series takes a slower approach, set in the literal underworld. Unlike other series where protagonists enter magical realms, "Level Up or Die" unfolds beneath the Earth's surface.

The story follows Elorian, a high-school gamer suddenly trapped in the underworld alongside fellow gamers. Despite gaining magical powers and the ability to level up, they are far from happy. An ancient succubus drains their power as they navigate dungeons filled with vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats. This series is a great introduction to the adventure and excitement of LitRPG.
