The highly anticipated Ōkami sequel, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally shed a little light on its story. IGN's recent interview with the project leads confirms it's a direct continuation of the original game's narrative.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel picks up where the first game left off. While director Hideki Kamiya playfully responded with "I wonder..." when asked if the trailer's protagonist was Amaterasu, Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed it was indeed the sun goddess.
While not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the Nintendo DS title, Ōkamiden, a previous installment starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, partly due to its DS platform and the absence of key original team members like Kamiya. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and the varied fan reception, stating that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's storyline.
Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey. This provides ample opportunity for new challenges and adventures.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates will be some time coming.
