Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and the industry's struggle with generative AI. While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike due to its pre-July 25th, 2024, development start date, the actors chose not to sign new contracts, prioritizing solidarity with striking union members and the fight for AI protection.
Chase explained on Bluesky that while the project wasn't officially "struck," it lacked the union-enforced AI rights they're fighting for. Many actors are voluntarily withholding work from such projects to support the union's efforts. Chase knew replacement was a possibility but hoped HoYoVerse would wait. Thurkettle, a non-union member, expressed similar shock and explained his decision as a personal stand against the potential misuse of AI in the industry. Both actors stand by their choices, even though it resulted in losing their roles. HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.
This isn't an isolated incident. Activision similarly recast some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies characters, including William Peck and Samantha Maxis, voiced by Zeke Alton and Julie Nathanson respectively. Alton expressed concern about the lack of credit for the replacement actor, potentially misrepresenting his abilities.
