Dragon Quest 12 remains in active development, with series creator Yuji Horii reassuring fans that information will be shared "little by little." During a livestream with his radio show group KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii mentioned that the team at Square Enix is diligently working on the project. This update marks the first news on Dragon Quest 12 since May 2024, when Horii also acknowledged the passing of the series' beloved character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. Additionally, lead producer Yu Miyake had stepped down to head Square Enix's mobile game division by that time.
Amid concerns over potential cancellation due to restructuring at Square Enix and a dearth of updates, Horii's recent comments have alleviated fears by confirming that Dragon Quest 12 is indeed still in progress. The game was initially announced during the series' 35th anniversary celebration and represents the first mainline entry since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age.
All we currently have to represent Dragon Quest 12 is its logo, which was released in 2021. Meanwhile, Square Enix has reported that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has exceeded sales expectations, having sold 2 million copies. This success bodes well for the future of the franchise as fans eagerly await more details on Dragon Quest 12.
