Ubisoft Announces XDefiant Server Shutdown in June 2025

Ubisoft has made the difficult decision to shut down its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, with servers ceasing operation on June 3, 2025. This "sunset" process begins December 3, 2024, halting new player registrations, downloads, and in-game purchases. Refunds for eligible purchases are underway.

Refund Information:

Full refunds will be issued for the Ultimate Founders Pack. Players who made in-game currency (VC) and DLC purchases since November 3, 2024, will also receive complete refunds. Processing may take up to eight weeks, with refunds expected by January 28, 2025. Contact Ubisoft support for assistance after this date. Note that the standard Founder's Pack and Founder's Pack Elite are not eligible for refunds.

Reasons for Shutdown:

According to Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, Marie-Sophie Waubert, XDefiant failed to achieve the player base needed to thrive in the competitive free-to-play market. Despite initial success and dedicated fans, the game fell short of sustaining itself long-term. Further investment was deemed unsustainable.

Impact on Development Teams:

The shutdown will result in significant restructuring. Approximately half of the XDefiant team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will downsize, leading to job losses for 143 employees in San Francisco and an estimated 134 in Osaka and Sydney. This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 across several American Ubisoft studios. Ubisoft is providing severance packages and career assistance to affected employees.

A Positive Note and Season 3:

Despite the shutdown, XDefiant's Executive Producer, Mark Rubin, expressed gratitude for the community and highlighted the positive interactions between players and developers. While the game exceeded 15 million players and initially broke internal user records for Ubisoft, its long-term sustainability proved challenging in the free-to-play landscape.

Season 3 will still launch as planned, though details are limited. Speculation points to Assassin's Creed-themed content. However, access will be restricted to players who acquired the game before December 3, 2024.

Prior Reports and Market Competition:

Insider Gaming reported on August 29, 2024, that low player counts contributed to XDefiant's struggles. While initially denied, the shutdown announcement confirms these concerns. The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 between Seasons 2 and 3 may have further impacted XDefiant's player base.

The closure of XDefiant marks a significant event for Ubisoft and the free-to-play gaming market, underscoring the challenges of establishing and maintaining a successful title in a highly competitive environment.
