Superman has his work cut out for him. After multiple trailer releases, fans questioned how the film would balance its growing ensemble cast. While the DC Universe reboot primarily focuses on three key figures—Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane, and chief antagonist Lex Luthor—the summer blockbuster will feature numerous superheroes and villains.
What's more, Superman unfolds in an established fictional universe where heroes and villains already exist. When we meet Clark Kent, he's been protecting Metropolis for years. Characters like Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Metamorpho require no introductory backstories.
Does writer-director James Gunn worry about overwhelming audiences by immersing them in this fully realized world?
During an Esquire Philippines interview, Gunn confirmed test screenings alleviated these concerns.
"Not really," he explained. "After numerous test screenings, we've seen audiences follow the story effortlessly—the clarity speaks for itself."
Gunn likened Superman's relationships to having two distinct friend groups: professional acquaintances and personal allies. While categorization remains debatable, he emphasized these characters function like any protagonist's supporting cast.
"Every protagonist has their orbit—Superman's no exception," Gunn noted. "Whether it's Daily Planet colleagues or Justice Guild allies, they're simply facets of his world. Costumes and powers don't make them any less relatable than supporting characters in other films."
"Take the Justice Guild—are they work friends or personal connections? That ambiguity reflects real-life relationships. Ultimately, they're just Clark's people from different spheres."

Gunn drew comparisons to Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, which juggled triple the speaking roles: "If audiences followed that three-hour biopic, our character count seems manageable."
Regarding runtime, Superman's theatrical cut runs 2 hours 9 minutes including credits—15 minutes leaner than 2013's Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill.
