Warner Bros. Games is shutting down its mobile title, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, less than a year after its launch. The game was removed from the Google Play Store and App Store on July 22nd, 2024. In-app purchases will be disabled on August 23rd, 2024, with servers officially going offline on October 21st, 2024.
The reasons behind the closure remain undisclosed, although NetherRealm's recent disbanding of its mobile games division (responsible for Mortal Kombat Mobile and Injustice) suggests a potential shift in company strategy.
The status of in-game purchases is currently unclear. NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games have yet to comment on potential refunds for players who made in-app purchases. They've promised further information soon, and players are encouraged to monitor their official X (formerly Twitter) account for updates.
Launched in October 2023 to commemorate the Mortal Kombat franchise's 30th anniversary, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught offered a unique take on the series. Unlike its fighting game predecessors, it blended action-adventure combat with a cinematic narrative, reminiscent of free-to-play mobile MOBAs. The storyline centered on Raiden and a team of fighters thwarting the Elder God Shinnok's power grab.
