The long-awaited return of Suikoden! After a decade-plus absence, the upcoming HD remaster of the first two games aims to reignite the franchise's popularity and pave the path for future installments.
A New Generation Discovers Suikoden
The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster seeks to revitalize this classic JRPG series. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama hope this remaster will introduce a new generation to Suikoden while rekindling the passion of longtime fans. In a Famitsu interview (translated via Google), they expressed their desire for the remaster to act as a springboard for future titles. Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, spoke of his admiration for the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series creator. Sakiyama, who directed Suikoden V, emphasized his goal of bringing Suikoden back into the spotlight.
Enhanced Experience: More Than Just HD
Based on the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection, the HD remaster updates the visuals significantly. Konami promises enhanced HD background illustrations, creating more immersive environments. While the pixel art sprites are polished, the original style remains intact. A new Gallery feature includes music, cutscenes, and an event viewer.
This remaster isn't just a visual upgrade. It addresses previous issues. The infamous, shortened Luca Blight cutscene from Suikoden 2's PSP version is restored to its original length. Additionally, some dialogue has been updated to reflect modern sensibilities; for example, Richmond no longer smokes.
Launch and Beyond
Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster launches March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This remaster is more than just a nostalgic trip; it's a potential catalyst for the future of the Suikoden franchise.
