Sony-Published Helldivers 2 Gets Shock Release Date on Xbox Series X and S

Helldivers 2 is arriving on Xbox Series X and S next month following a surprise announcement that sees Sony publish one of its flagship titles on PlayStation’s main competitor.

Arrowhead Game Studios’ explosive co-op third-person shooter will launch on the Microsoft platform on August 26, 2025, as confirmed during a recent livestream. Notably, this date coincides with the release of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5.

In an update posted to Xbox Wire, Helldivers 2 Game Director Mikael Eriksson shared his thoughts on what this multi-platform expansion means for the development team.

“We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game," he said. "We have so much more in store for the future months and years – and the more players we have the more stories we can tell! The fight for Super Earth has only just begun.”

Helldivers 2 originally launched on PC and PS5 in February 2024, quickly becoming a rare live-service success for Sony Interactive Entertainment. It stands as the fastest-selling game from PlayStation Studios ever, moving an impressive 12 million copies within its first 12 weeks of release.

Although player counts on Steam—which Valve reports publicly—remain robust eighteen months after its record-breaking debut, the Xbox launch is expected to significantly expand the active player base.

Despite this success, Helldivers 2’s arrival on Xbox was unexpected. Sony traditionally keeps PlayStation Studios exclusives within its own ecosystem or on PC, rarely venturing onto rival consoles. MLB The Show, developed by Sony’s San Diego Studio and published by SIE, is a notable exception, releasing on Xbox under the Major League Baseball branding. Additionally, Sony recently released LEGO Horizon Adventures across Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC.

The once-impenetrable barriers of console exclusivity are clearly dissolving. Microsoft, which announced major layoffs affecting over 9,000 employees yesterday as part of a significant restructuring, is fully embracing cross-platform strategies. The upcoming release of Gears of War: Reloaded marks the debut of this formerly Xbox-exclusive franchise on PlayStation, while Hellblade 2 arrives on PS5 in August and Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds 2 launches on Sony’s console later in October.
