Sony Unveils New AAA Studio for PlayStation

Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA Title in the Works

A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is developing a high-profile, original AAA IP for the PS5, as confirmed by a recent job posting. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio, adding to its already impressive lineup of renowned game developers.

The announcement has generated considerable excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate news from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's recent acquisitions of Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite further demonstrate its commitment to expanding its first-party development capabilities. This latest, unnamed studio adds another intriguing element to the PlayStation ecosystem.

The job listing for a Project Senior Producer revealed the existence of this "newly-established AAA studio" in Los Angeles, sparking speculation about its origins. One theory points to a spin-off team from Bungie, formed following the July 2024 layoffs where 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team was reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title before its closure in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024 under Blundell's leadership, suggesting the new studio may be a continuation of their previous work.

Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's plausible that the new Los Angeles studio houses his project. While details remain scarce, speculation suggests the team might be reviving or refining Deviation Games' unannounced AAA title. Although an official announcement from Sony may be years away, the confirmation of another first-party game in development is welcome news for PlayStation enthusiasts.
