Sony has shared an update regarding the nostalgic PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4 themes that were temporarily available on PS5 consoles, while also addressing whether more themes might come to the platform.
Temporary Farewell for Classic Themes
In an official announcement, Sony confirmed these beloved retro themes will be removed from PS5 systems on January 31, 2025. However, the company reassured fans these nostalgic designs will make a comeback at a later date, offering hope to users who enjoyed the iconic startup sounds and visuals.
"We appreciate the overwhelming response to our limited-time classic themes," Sony stated. "Given their popularity, we're currently working to bring these special designs back in coming months."

No Additional Themes Planned
While the classic themes will return, Sony dashed hopes for new theme additions in a subsequent announcement: "Though we don't currently plan to develop additional themes, we remain committed to honoring PlayStation's legacy hardware with our community."
The news disappointed many fans who had hoped for expanded customization options. Despite being a staple feature on previous consoles, full theme support still hasn't arrived on PS5, and Sony's statement suggests this won't change during the current console generation.
These commemorative themes originally launched on December 3, 2024 to celebrate PlayStation's 30th anniversary. Each theme faithfully recreates the distinct aesthetic of its respective console generation - from the PS1's iconic startup screen to the PS4's dynamic wave patterns - complete with their original sound effects.
