Sony Patents New DualSense Gun Accessory

Enhanced Immersion: Sony Patents DualSense Gun Attachment

A newly unveiled Sony patent reveals an innovative controller accessory transforming the PlayStation DualSense into a more immersive handheld firearm. This intriguing development highlights Sony's ongoing commitment to R&D within the gaming industry.

While much attention focuses on new game releases and console launches like the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony's behind-the-scenes innovations remain a source of fascination. This latest patent, filed in June 2024 and published January 2, 2025, details a gun-like attachment for the DualSense.

This accessory enhances the DualSense's already impressive haptic feedback by adding a tangible "trigger" mechanism. Attached to the controller's base, it allows for a side-grip, utilizing the space between the R1 and R2 buttons as an aiming sight. This design promises heightened realism, particularly beneficial for first-person shooters and action-adventure games. However, consumer availability remains unconfirmed.

Sony DualSense Gun Attachment: A Closer Look

Patent figures (14 & 15) illustrate the handgun-like grip facilitated by the attachment. Figure 3 clearly shows its connection to the DualSense's underside. Figures 12 and 13 depict potential pairings with VR headsets and other unspecified accessories. As with many exciting Sony patents, market release remains uncertain.

The gaming industry continuously pushes hardware boundaries, from next-gen consoles to controller enhancements. Fans eagerly await official announcements from Sony regarding this and future patent developments.
