Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is reportedly working to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reported that Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he’s actively engaging with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of work and investment, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. His statement seemingly dashed hopes for a Sleeping Dogs movie.
However, Liu’s recent social media interaction reignited interest. The success of his efforts to secure the rights or otherwise revive the project remains uncertain.
Released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Sleeping Dogs follows Detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates a Hong Kong Triad. The game received critical acclaim, earning an 8/10 rating from IGN, yet never spawned sequels.
