We rank this SSD among the top choices for PS5 upgrades in 2025, though it is worth noting that as one of the fastest and most advanced M.2 drives available, the current PS5 cannot fully utilize its capabilities. IGN's Jacqueline Thomas highlights in our roundup that "the PS5 only rated it for 6,335MB/s" when formatted for her console—significantly lower than Samsung's advertised sequential read and write speeds of up to 14,800 and 13,400MB/s. However, this doesn't mean you should overlook it; the reason is future-proofing.

Thomas points out that "While Sony hasn't announced the PlayStation 6 yet, there's a strong possibility that if the console supports user-upgradable storage like its predecessor, it will use the PCIe 5 interface." Thus, while this drive performs excellently in today's PS5, it is prepared to unlock its full potential with future technology or serve as an outstanding boot drive for PC gaming.
