PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview

by Layla Apr 02,2025

If you were to conduct a Family Feud-style survey asking which pro sports simulation video game series people would most want 2K to develop that they're not already working on, a revival of NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. Even pro golf might not rank as the second or third choice (consider MLB and NHL). However, 2K is back for another swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after spending a couple of hours playing, there's a lot to appreciate.

Developer HB Studios has been perfecting its golf game for quite some time, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago before partnering with 2K and rebranding to PGA Tour 2K in 2020. The experience and maturity of the team are evident in PGA Tour 2K25. While playing, I found it challenging to pinpoint any major flaws. Is it the most visually stunning sports game? Not quite. Would it be great to have more real-life courses? Absolutely. (2K25 does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and the Open Championship.) Did I notice some unexpected choppiness in the framerate on PC when pressing Y to survey each new hole? Indeed. Yet, diving into this year's game was genuinely enjoyable.

The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. With various options available, I found the right stick method most comfortable while using a controller. You pull down to wind up and push forward to strike the ball and follow through. You can adjust this for a more forgiving experience or crank up the difficulty, where a slight miscalculation can result in a severe slice or hook. For those seeking a more relaxed game, the lower difficulty settings (Perfect Swing) ensure that missed inputs don't hinder your progress as much. Additionally, tapping LB lets you shape your shots, offering more control over the ball's path. HB Studios also claims improvements in ball physics, and the ability to move laterally in the tee box to adjust your shot around obstacles, such as trees, is a welcome feature. It certainly helps to start playing as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, known for his golfing prowess.

MyCareer mode has seen enhancements with narrative elements similar to those in other sports games, adding an entertaining layer. I was offered a role in a movie alongside Christopher "Shooter McGavin" McDonald – who appears in the game, though not as his iconic Happy Gilmore character due to licensing – where I could choose to be a hero or villain, impacting which MyCareer stats would be boosted. Gear earned through VC can also enhance your stats, while your skills can be upgraded by playing and winning. The developers have introduced Quests, which are overarching goals that can be refreshed weekly or at any time, like achieving 10 consecutive birdies.

In MyPlayer mode, I didn't spend my entire demo time perfecting my character's appearance, but even a brief session with the player creator got me close enough. The addition of skill trees is a nice upgrade. Unfortunately, I couldn't explore the multiplayer features, which include ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (akin to groups or clubs). I fondly remember casual chats with friends while playing Links 2004 on the original Xbox, and PGA Tour 2K25 seems poised to recreate and enhance that experience. The inclusion of asynchronous multiplayer options is a thoughtful touch for players in different time zones.

Previewing PGA Tour 2K25 is challenging because it performs well across the board without any glaring shortcomings. While it might not generate overwhelming excitement, it's a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those looking for a relaxing game. Fortunately, you can try it out for free, as a playable demo of PGA Tour 2K25 is available starting today.
