Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return
Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will transition to an open queue format. This format will require teams to field 1-3 heroes of each class. The positive reception fuels speculation about a potential permanent addition of 6v6 to the game.
The 6v6 mode's initial appearance in the Overwatch Classic event last November showcased its enduring appeal. A subsequent playtest, running from December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its popularity as one of the most played modes. This second playtest, unlike the first, omitted the return of certain classic hero abilities.
The recent extension, announced via Keller's Twitter, allows players more time to enjoy 12-player matches. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade section. The shift to open queue mid-season marks a significant change, altering the strategic team composition compared to the initial role-queue format.
Arguments for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The continued success of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a consistently top player request. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, a major departure from the original Overwatch, significantly impacted gameplay, with varying player responses.
However, the extended playtest and positive feedback have reignited hope for a permanent 6v6 mode. Many players anticipate its inclusion in the competitive playlist, a possibility once the playtesting phase concludes.
