Orlando Bloom has talked about the chance of returning as Legolas in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and he has a clear vision for how the character should be portrayed.

The Hunt for Gollum, set for release on December 17, 2027, will feature star and director Andy Serkis reprising his role as Gollum, as the title implies. This time, audiences will explore what Gollum was doing in the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Could other actors from the original trilogy come back too? In an interview with MovieWeb to promote his new film, Deep Cover, the 48-year-old Bloom spoke about the possibility of Legolas returning for The Hunt for Gollum. Beyond being enthusiastic about the idea, he said Legolas should remain the same age as he was in the original trilogy, requiring the use of AI-powered de-aging technology to achieve that look.

Play“I think first of all, I’d like to see \[Legolas\] the same age as he was \[in the original trilogy\],” Bloom said. “So, AI would have to come into play. I think I’d like to see him lithe and breezy and warrior-like—so AI would have to come into play.

“And I think if they asked me, I would say, ‘Absolutely!’ It would be so much fun to go back to New Zealand and stay as long as they need me. Because honestly, if you want to be anywhere in the world right now, New Zealand is the place.”

Bloom first portrayed Legolas in 2001’s beloved The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, at age 24. Now, 24 years later, is a Legolas return realistic? We do know The Hunt for Gollum is planned to bring back several familiar faces, including Gandalf. The 86-year-old Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, has said he’d be open to returning as the wizard—as long as aging doesn’t get in the way. Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed Aragorn, is also open to coming back.
