Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
This intriguing possibility stems from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who has previously uncovered valuable information about Nintendo's parts suppliers. Their latest discovery involves shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—a term typically used for the bottom of computer mice—intended for attachment to "game console handles."
The manifests list two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, not found in public component databases, suggesting these are entirely new products. The tape's reported dimensions (90 x 90mm) seem large enough to cover the entire back of the new Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO handheld PC, released in 2023, already incorporates this functionality in its right controller, which can be rotated sideways to function as a mouse. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement in this mode.
The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further fuels speculation about potential design overlaps between the two devices.
