Doom 64's Potential Next-Gen Arrival: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions Hinted at by ESRB Rating Update
Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a possible imminent release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made official announcements, the updated ESRB listing is a strong indicator of a forthcoming release. The 2020 enhanced version for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring graphical improvements and a new chapter, paved the way for this potential next-gen port.
Originally a Nintendo 64 exclusive, Doom 64 wasn't accessible to all gamers in the 90s. The 2020 release broadened its reach to PS4 and Xbox One players, and now, a current-gen release seems likely. The ESRB's action of updating the rating to include PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is significant, as studios generally submit games for rating close to their release date to ensure accuracy. Past instances of ESRB ratings preceding official announcements, such as with Felix the Cat's 2023 re-release, further support this prediction.
Given the history of ESRB ratings often appearing a few months before launch, a relatively short wait for a next-gen Doom 64 experience might be in store. While the updated rating doesn't list a PC version, the 2020 port included a Steam release, and PC players can already enjoy a Doom 64 experience through modding existing Doom titles. Bethesda's past practice of quietly releasing older Doom ports also hints at a potential surprise launch for Doom 64.
Looking beyond Doom 64, the Doom franchise's future remains bright. Doom: The Dark Ages is anticipated for a 2025 release, with a possible official date announcement in January. Releasing updated versions of classic titles like Doom 64 could serve as excellent pre-release marketing for the next main installment in the series.
