MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

MultiVersus is set to close its doors after its upcoming 5th Season. Dive in to discover what Season 5 holds and what's next for the game post-shutdown.

Warner Bros. Games Announces MultiVersus Shutdown

MultiVersus Season 5: The Final Chapter

MultiVersus' journey is coming to an end. On January 31, 2025, the game's official Twitter (X) account declared that MultiVersus will conclude its run after Season 5, ending on May 30, 2025. Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed in a blog post that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."

Season 5 kicks off on February 4, 2025, and will run through May 30, 2025. Players can look forward to two new characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. Both characters will be unlockable through gameplay, as stated in the blog post: "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.

No official reasons have been given for the shutdown.

Continuing the Adventure in Offline Mode

After Season 5 ends, MultiVersus fans can still enjoy the game offline. Players can access local gameplay mode, playing solo against AI or with up to three friends. To do this, you must download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST until May 30 at 9 AM PDT.

Upon logging in, the game will generate a local save file linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, allowing you to keep all your earned and purchased content for offline play.

As of January 31, 2025, real money transactions have ceased. Gleamium, the in-game currency, can no longer be bought, but existing Gleamium can be used to unlock content until the end of Season 5.

MultiVersus: A Journey From Public Beta to Closure

MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

MultiVersus first opened its doors to the public in July 2022, offering a free-to-play fighting game experience reminiscent of Super Smash Bros., yet unique with its 2v2 team format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open beta saw numerous updates and two seasons of fresh content. The game relaunched in May 2024 with enhancements like new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, and new currencies.

Despite these updates, player satisfaction remained low due to technical issues, frequent disconnections, and the game's microtransactions. In July 2024, MultiVersus experienced a 70% drop in player numbers on PS4 and PS5.

MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, leaving behind a legacy of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

You can download MultiVersus on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
