Modders' tenacity never fails to impress. Elden Ring Nightreign is now available, and within a day of its release, a well-known FromSoftware modder has already showcased a working Duos mode.
Luke Yui, the creator behind popular cooperative mods for Elden Ring and Armored Core VI, posted a brief demonstration video to their YouTube channel. It features a two-player mod for Elden Ring Nightreign, letting a pair of Nightfarers team up instead of being limited to solo or three-player groups.
It's crucial to clarify this is not yet a public or playable mod, but a proof-of-concept from Yui. They mentioned the mod operates without connecting to the official matchmaking servers. This allows for using other mods during play, but it also means bypassing the normal game systems. Whether this evolves into a practical solution or remains a neat experiment is yet to be seen.
While Elden Ring Nightreign supports solo and three-player co-op, a dedicated two-player option is absent. Players must either go it alone, dismiss a friend, or matchmake for a third. This might seem minor, but for duos who prefer to play just together, it's a point of frustration.
This design choice has also emerged as a common critique in Nightreign's early reception. The missing duos mode is frequently mentioned in initial negative reviews, with many players finding the restriction cumbersome. As noted on the Elden Ring subreddit, the Nightreign-specific community page resembles a "threesome subreddit" due to the volume of posts seeking a third player.
In a conversation with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki acknowledged the team had "somewhat overlooked and neglected the duos aspect." He confirmed the Nightreign team is aware and evaluating the possibility of adding support after launch. Given the overwhelming community demand for a dedicated duos mode, it's an issue that's difficult to ignore.
