Microsoft Unveils Xbox UI with Steam Tab, Then Removes It

by Natalie May 25,2025

Microsoft recently unveiled a sneak peek of a potential Xbox UI update through an unintended leak in a blog post titled “Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox.” The post, which was quickly modified after the leak, included an image showcasing Xbox Series X | S consoles alongside various devices. Keen observers noticed a "Steam" tab on some of the screens, hinting at an integration with Valve's popular PC gaming platform.

This unexpected revelation suggests that Microsoft is exploring ways to connect Xbox users with their PC game libraries from multiple storefronts, including Steam and the Epic Games Store. According to sources cited by The Verge, this feature is still in the early stages of development, and it's unclear when or if it will be rolled out to the public.

The inclusion of Steam in an official Xbox UI mockup is significant, especially given Microsoft's ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between Xbox and PC gaming. Over the past decade, Microsoft has been increasingly bringing its titles to PC and other platforms. Notable examples include games like Pentiment and Grounded on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, with rumors suggesting that the Master Chief Collection might also make its way to PlayStation.

Microsoft's strategy to blur the lines between Xbox and PC gaming was further emphasized with the launch of the "This is an Xbox" campaign, which highlights the variety of devices on which players can enjoy Xbox games. In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible directly on Xbox hardware.

Looking ahead, Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, expected in 2027, is rumored to be more akin to a PC than any previous Xbox console. This move could further integrate the Xbox ecosystem with PC gaming, potentially revolutionizing how players interact with their game libraries across different platforms.
