Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater launches in just a few weeks, but players will need to wait a bit longer for Fox Hunt, the game's online multiplayer mode.
The single-player campaign of Snake Eater arrives on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 28, with Fox Hunt planned for a post-launch update this "fall." Publisher Konami has not provided a more specific release window.
Announced in June, Fox Hunt is a completely new multiplayer experience separate from Metal Gear Online, which was included with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008. The original MGO remained active for four years before its servers were shut down in 2012.
"Fox Hunt is a completely original online multiplayer mode," said longtime Metal Gear developer Yu Sahara, now serving as the mode’s director, during the June announcement. "While it exists in the same world as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the gameplay is entirely different.
"Many fans associate Metal Gear multiplayer with Metal Gear Online, but Fox Hunt introduces a fresh approach. We deeply appreciate the MGO community’s continued support and desire for its return, but the multiplayer scene has evolved significantly since then. We carefully considered how a new online mode could stand out today."
Sahara added that Fox Hunt will emphasize the series’ core stealth and survival mechanics, advancing camouflage and hide-and-seek gameplay to deliver an experience that goes "beyond traditional shootouts."
Aside from Fox Hunt, Delta is a full remake of the 2004 classic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Notably, original creator Hideo Kojima has stated he does not plan to play the remake.
