by Finn Mar 04,2025

A redditor's gaming mouse spontaneously combusted, nearly causing a house fire. The user, u/lommelinn, reported waking to the smell of smoke and discovering their Gigabyte M6880X wired optical mouse engulfed in flames. The incident, which occurred while their PC was in sleep mode, resulted in significant damage to the mouse (the top rear panel melted completely), their desk, and even their modular synthesizer.

The Gigabyte M6880X, a seemingly ordinary wired mouse with no internal battery and powered by a low-voltage USB 2.0 connection, presents a perplexing case. The extent of the damage, concentrated on the top casing, remains unexplained. Images shared by the user show extensive melting to the mouse and surrounding surfaces.
