HBO Exec Predicts 4 Seasons for The Last of Us

by Sebastian May 14,2025

HBO's critically acclaimed series, The Last of Us, is set to continue captivating audiences with plans for a total of four seasons, according to Francesca Orsi, an executive at HBO. While Orsi mentioned that "it's looking like" the series will span four seasons, she also emphasized that there is no "complete or final plan" set in stone at this time. "I wouldn't want to confirm that, but it's looking like this season and then two more seasons after this, and we're done," she told Deadline.

Fans eagerly awaiting the return of the show in April 2025 can look forward to new developments. Orsi teased, "There's certain elements in terms of the various factions that are competing for survival that reveal themselves as a really intriguing survivalist group, and I think they just have a quality to them that feels distinct in how they present it." She further elaborated on the unique presentation of these factions, highlighting differences in wardrobe and makeup that set them apart from typical characters.

The Last of Us Season 2 Cast: Who's New and Coming Back to the HBO Show?

11 ImagesIf you haven't watched the first season yet, there's still time to catch up before Episode 1 of Season 2 premieres in April. Unlike Season 1, which adapted the entirety of the first game into one season, HBO plans to stretch the narrative of The Last of Us Part 2 over multiple seasons. Specifically, Season 2 will cover the first part of the sequel, ending at a "natural breakpoint" after just seven episodes.

New characters will join the cast in Season 2, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel. Details about Catherine O'Hara's role remain under wraps, adding an element of mystery to the upcoming season.

In IGN's review of The Last of Us: Season 1, the series was praised as "a stunning adaptation that should thrill newcomers and enrich those already familiar with Joel and Ellie's journey alike," receiving a high score of 9/10.
