How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley

When starting a new character in Stardew Valley, you get the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog as your first pet. However, the game initially limited players to just one pet per save file. The good news is that the 1.6 update changed this, allowing you to expand your pet family.
To unlock the ability to have more pets, you must first maximize your friendship level with your existing pet. Daily care is key: ensure you fill their water bowl with your Watering Can each day, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically.

Additionally, interact with your pet by petting them once a day; you'll know you've done it right when a heart bubble appears above their head. You can monitor your pet's friendship meter in the "Animals" tab of the pause menu.
Once your pet's friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie in the mail, inviting you to adopt more pets from her shop, located just south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send this notification at the start of Year 2.

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential as they not only provide water but also serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing them from running away if neglected. Each Pet Bowl costs 5,000g and requires 25 x Hardwood, which you can obtain with a Copper Axe or better. It's wise to buy these before adopting your new pets to maintain their friendship levels.

For additional pet accessories, visit Marnie's Ranch where you can buy Doghouses and Cat Trees. These items are purely decorative and do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
