A new report from a video game research firm suggests Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV. Here's what we know about the two companies' rumored joint project.
Report: Square Enix and Tenvent Developing FFXIV Mobile Game
Details Remain Largely Unconfirmed
According to a recent report by market research firm Niko Partners, 15 video games were approved for import and release in China by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). The list reportedly includes a mobile adaptation of Square Enix's MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, which is said to be in development at Tencent. Other notable titles on the approval list are a Rainbow Six title for mobile and PC, two Marvel IP-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game based on Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent working on a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV emerged last month, neither company has made an official announcement.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 3, Niko Partners' Daniel Ahmad stated the FFXIV mobile game is "expected to be a standalone MMORPG separate from the PC version." However, he clarified this information is based on "mostly industry chatter" and lacks official confirmation.

Tencent is a major force in mobile gaming, and this purported partnership with Square Enix aligns with the latter's stated strategy of expanding to multiple platforms. In early May, Square Enix announced a new, aggressive multiplatform approach for its flagship franchises, including Final Fantasy.
