Fan-Made Sonic Mania Inspired Game Impresses with Nostalgia

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-esque Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, developed by Starteam, is a Sonic the Hedgehog fan game channeling the spirit of Sonic Mania. The active Sonic fan community consistently produces sequels and spin-offs, and Sonic Mania, a 25th-anniversary celebration, remains a series favorite. While a true sequel never materialized due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' other pursuits, Sonic Galactic captures the timeless appeal of Mania's pixel art style.

This fan-made game, first showcased in 2020, imagines a 32-bit Sonic title, reminiscent of a hypothetical Sega Saturn release. It blends authentic retro 2D platforming with a unique twist.

Gameplay and Characters:

The second demo, released in early 2025, features the classic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – in new zones. Joining them are Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and a new character, Tunnel the Mole (inspired by Sonic Frontiers). Each playable character boasts unique paths within each zone. The special stages, heavily inspired by Sonic Mania, challenge players to collect rings within a time limit in a 3D environment.

A typical playthrough focusing on Sonic's stages takes about an hour, with the other characters offering approximately one stage each, resulting in a total playtime of a couple of hours. The demo provides a substantial taste of what the full game promises. The game's pixel art style and classic Sonic gameplay will resonate strongly with fans of Sonic Mania and retro platformers.
