Microsoft has announced a delay for the highly anticipated Fable reboot, shifting its release from 2025 to 2026. This news comes alongside a first look at new pre-alpha gameplay footage, offering fans a glimpse into what Playground Games, the UK studio behind the beloved Forza Horizon series, has in store for this iconic Xbox franchise.
In the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, the former head of Rare who now leads Xbox Game Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for the project's progress. "Really excited about progress," Duncan stated, emphasizing the team's commitment to delivering a game that lives up to the legacy of Fable. He reassured fans that the delay is in the best interest of the game, citing Playground's track record with the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series, which boasts a 92 Metacritic score and numerous awards.
Duncan highlighted the unique elements that Playground is bringing to Fable, including stunning visuals, engaging gameplay, and the signature British humor that fans of the series have come to love. He promised a beautifully realized version of Albion, the game's fantasy world, which is set to be the most visually impressive yet.
Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled 50 seconds of new pre-alpha gameplay. The footage showcases various aspects of Fable, including combat with a range of weapons such as one-handed swords, two-handed hammers, and two-handed swords, as well as magical attacks like fireballs. The gameplay also features scenes of the main character navigating a fantasy-styled forest on horseback and engaging in city exploration. A humorous moment, true to Fable's roots, shows the protagonist kicking a chicken, while another scene depicts a clever trap involving sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature.
Fable, originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, was announced for a reboot in 2020, marking a "new beginning" for the series. Subsequent reveals, including one featuring The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade at the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase, and a new trailer during the Xbox Showcase event in June 2024, have kept fans eagerly awaiting more details.
This reboot represents the first mainline Fable game since Fable 3 in 2010 and is poised to be one of Xbox Game Studios' most significant releases. Duncan's confidence in Playground Games and their vision for Fable promises a game that will be worth the wait, blending the best of the franchise's past with innovative new elements.
