Sega's recent trademark filings for the Ecco the Dolphin IP have ignited speculation about a potential franchise revival. This follows a 24-year hiatus for the beloved dolphin adventure series.
The Return of Ecco?
Gematsu reported that Sega filed trademarks for "Ecco" and "Ecco the Dolphin" in late December 2024 (December 27th, to be precise). This news, made public recently, has generated considerable excitement among fans.
Originally released in 1992 by Sega, with development by Appaloosa Interactive (formerly Novotrade International), the Ecco the Dolphin series captivated players with its unique blend of underwater exploration and intergalactic conflict. The original game, and its four sequels (released up to 2000), featured Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin, battling alien threats to protect Earth. A planned sequel to Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, tentatively titled Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe, was unfortunately canceled following the decline of the Sega Dreamcast.
While Sega remains a prominent game developer and publisher, Appaloosa Interactive is no longer operational. However, many of its former staff, including Ecco the Dolphin's creator Ed Annunziata, continue to contribute to the video game industry. Annunziata, in a 2019 interview with NintendoLife, expressed his enduring hope for a future Ecco sequel, stating, "One thing I can say is in the future, people are playing this game. I never give up!"
Currently, concrete details regarding the future of Ecco the Dolphin remain scarce. However, the trademark filings suggest the possibility of a new entry joining Sega's impressive roster of upcoming projects. Over the past two years, Sega has announced a remarkable number of titles, encompassing both classic franchises (Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter) and new IPs (Project Century, the new "RPG-like" Virtua Fighter). The addition of Ecco the Dolphin to this list would certainly be a welcome surprise for many.
