DC's The Authority film adaptation faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film's development has proven challenging.
Gunn cited the success of Amazon's The Boys and the evolution of the overall DC Universe story as contributing factors to the delays. He described The Authority as the most difficult project to adapt, acknowledging the need to balance the source material's inherent brutality with the existing DCU landscape. The project is currently on the back burner, prioritizing other initiatives and established characters within the franchise.
While The Engineer, a key member of The Authority, is slated to appear in Superman: Legacy, the film's future remains uncertain. For more on The Authority's characters, see IGN's article, "Who Are the Authority: The WildStorm DCU Characters Explained."
Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also encountered obstacles. Waller, a Peacemaker spin-off, experienced setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing well. Paradise Lost remains a priority, with the pilot script currently under development. Swamp Thing, directed by James Mangold, is on hold pending Mangold's other commitments, but its delay isn't considered critical to the overarching DCU narrative.
