Excitement is building as the renowned Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, gears up to unveil its first major video game. In a recent interview with Business Insider, CEO Travis Willingham hinted that an announcement could be just around the corner, saying it might happen "any day." Although details about the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured that the dedicated team is tirelessly working on the project.
Willingham, who is not only a co-founder but also a star of Critical Role, described the upcoming video game as an interactive experience where players will have the power to steer the narrative. "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained. This suggests a deeply immersive gameplay experience within the richly developed world that fans have come to love.

Critical Role has evolved significantly since its inception, branching out into various projects. One of its most notable ventures is the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, which has captured a wide audience. The forthcoming video game, while part of the Critical Role universe, is not expected to directly tie into these existing projects. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in the "active pursuit" of developing this video game, hinting at a long journey that was nearing its end. Whether the game will follow one of Critical Role's campaigns or introduce an original story within the world of Exandria is still unclear.
Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. With the first quarter of 2025 now underway, the promise of an imminent announcement adds to the anticipation. Willingham also shared insights into the broader gaming industry's challenges, noting, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels... there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
While a release date for the Critical Role video game has yet to be announced, fans can look forward to more updates. In the meantime, they can delve into the first details of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
