Cow becomes surprise fan favorite in Mario Kart World

After three decades of peaceful grazing across Moo Moo Farm and Moo Moo Meadows, an unlikely superstar has emerged from Mario Kart World's expansive roster - the unassuming Cow. When we sat down with Mario Kart World producer Kosuke Yabuki, we couldn't resist asking about gaming's newest bovine celebrity.

The Making of a Moo-ving Star

"Thank you for asking about Cow," Yabuki began - possibly the greatest interview opening in gaming history. "We included Cow thinking players would enjoy it, but the overwhelming response surpassed our wildest expectations. It's been absolutely wonderful."

Play

This sentiment echoes what Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen shared about their internal projections being "completely trampled" by Cow's popularity. The backstory behind Cow's inclusion makes her rise even sweeter. During last month's Ask the Developer series, Yabuki revealed how a developer's humorous sketch of Cow behind the wheel convinced the team to make her playable.

The Domino Effect

"Adding Cow really broke the floodgates," Yabuki explained. "Once we had that first unexpected character, we thought 'why stop there?' That's when our designers really went wild with ideas - Penguin, Pokey, Snowman, they all came rushing in after Cow paved the way."

The producer admits the creative frenzy makes it hard to recall the exact order: "I remember approving Cow, and suddenly my desk was buried under dozens of character proposals."

The Beefy Controversy

A curious twist emerged during preview events when observers noticed Cow could consume beef-based Dash Foods like steak kabobs. When pressed on whether these were vegetarian alternatives, Yabuki played coy: "Sorry, that's classified information," he chuckled.

The mystery continues as Yabuki remained tight-lipped about Diddy Kong's potential appearance. With Mario Kart World launching alongside Nintendo Switch 2 in just two days, players won't have to wait much longer for answers.
