Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a grand entrance into the world of virtual and mixed reality exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The announcement came on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, marking the franchise’s first foray into VR and MR gaming.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk shared his excitement on 2k’s blog, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, echoed this enthusiasm, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
While Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be coming to PSVR2 at the time of this writing.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR offers a unique gameplay experience, placing players at a Command Table where they can maneuver around the world and strategize. The game allows players to “peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units, like a tabletop game come to life.”
Players can enjoy the game in either immersive virtual reality or mixed reality, with the ability to switch freely between modes. In VR, players find themselves in an ornate museum overlooking a vista personalized to their chosen leader. In MR, the Command Table integrates seamlessly into the player's physical space.
The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players can join a game using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can also include AI-controlled opponents, collaborating with friends to defeat them or competing against other human players to see who will stand the test of time. During gameplay, players can see their friends and opponents across the Command Table as their chosen world leaders. Note that online multiplayer requires a 2k Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has been actively responding to player feedback received during Civ 7’s early access period. The official Civ 7 Twitter (X) page announced that the team is addressing issues highlighted by the community. Early access began on February 6, 2025, for those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition. The game received mixed reviews on Steam, with players pointing out issues with the User Interface, which made it challenging to access key gameplay information.
In response, Firaxis Games committed to improving the game through UI enhancements, stating that their priorities include “making UI interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, fixing areas of polish like formatting, and more.”
The community has also requested additional features such as adding teams to multiplayer games, a wider variety of map types, and more. Firaxis Games promised to roll out a quality-of-life update in March, focusing on “quality-of-life UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance and improvement, adjustments to diplomacy and crises, plus additional bug fixes.”
Civilization 7 VR is slated for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific release date announced yet. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently available in early access and is set for a worldwide release on February 11, 2025, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
