Civilization 7 Dev Firaxis Says 'There's Hope for Gandhi, Yet'

by Matthew May 19,2025

With the release of *Civilization 7*, fans of the iconic strategy series are buzzing with one big question: Where is Gandhi? The Indian leader has been a staple in every base game of the franchise since its debut in 1991, famously associated with the mythical "Nuclear Gandhi" bug. However, Gandhi is missing from the initial lineup of *Civilization 7*. But fret not, Gandhi enthusiasts—hope is on the horizon.

In an exclusive interview, *Civilization 7* lead designer Ed Beach shed light on Gandhi's absence and future prospects. "So I would say we haven't forgotten about anybody who's been in our game before," Beach explained. He hinted at a broader roadmap for the game, suggesting that some civilizations are better suited for inclusion in future updates rather than the base game. "Certainly civilizations, there's a lot of consternation right now about where's Great Britain or England, why aren't they in our game?" he added, noting that Carthage and Great Britain are slated to join *Civilization 7* in The Crossroads of the World Collection DLC in March 2025, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal.

Beach elaborated on Firaxis' approach to selecting civilizations for *Civilization 7*. "One thing I always think about is, we've had the same situation where iconic civilizations haven't been in our base game before," he said, citing the absence of Mongolia and Persia in previous base games. "So we always have to leave somebody out. There're just too many popular choices and we always want to have a few fresh ones that sound really new and exciting to people. So things are getting left behind, but we always are looking at the big picture, when we're going to bring leaders or civs into the fold. So there's hope for Gandhi, yet."

So, for those missing Gandhi, rest assured that there's still a chance he'll make his way into *Civilization 7* through future DLCs.

In the meantime, *Civilization 7* has received mixed reviews on Steam, primarily due to concerns about the user interface, limited map variety, and the absence of expected features. In response, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged these criticisms in an interview with IGN but remained optimistic about the game's future, citing encouraging early performance and confidence in the "legacy Civ audience" eventually warming up to the game.
