A Borderlands fan's dream comes true: Caleb McAlpine, battling cancer, experiences the magic of Borderlands 4 early.
Gearbox Grants a Wish
Caleb McAlpine, a dedicated Borderlands fan facing a cancer diagnosis, received an incredible gift: early access to Borderlands 4. His November 26th Reddit post detailed his journey. Gearbox Software flew him and a friend first-class to their studio, where they toured the facilities, met developers, and played the highly anticipated game.
Caleb described his experience as "amazing," highlighting the opportunity to play the game and meet the team, including CEO Randy Pitchford. Following the studio visit, he and his friend enjoyed a VIP tour of the Omni Frisco Hotel at The Star, courtesy of the hotel.
While remaining tight-lipped about specific Borderlands 4 details, Caleb emphasized the unforgettable nature of the experience, expressing gratitude to everyone who supported his request.
A Community Rallies
On October 24th, 2024, Caleb initially posted on Reddit, sharing his prognosis (7-12 months, possibly less than two years even with successful chemo) and his heartfelt wish to play Borderlands 4 before it was too late. His "long shot" request resonated deeply with the Borderlands community.
The outpouring of support led to numerous individuals contacting Gearbox, urging them to fulfill Caleb's wish. Randy Pitchford responded swiftly on Twitter(X), initiating contact with Caleb and promising to explore options. Within a month, Gearbox made Caleb's dream a reality.
A GoFundMe campaign supporting Caleb's cancer treatment has also seen a surge in donations, surpassing its $9,000 goal and currently standing at $12,415 USD. The story of his Borderlands 4 experience has touched many hearts and inspired further support.
