Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 reached a significant milestone with the release of Patch 8 on April 15, 2025. This update represents the last major content addition to the game by Larian Studios. Following the patch's release, the player count on Steam soared, moving from approximately 60,000 concurrent players to over 169,000, positioning the game just outside the top 10 most played on the platform.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared his thoughts on the player surge via Twitter (X) on April 22, highlighting how the thriving mod support allows the studio to shift focus towards their next project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios is moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative ventures.

In light of this transition, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently engaging with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, brings an array of exciting new features. Players can now enjoy 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play capabilities, and a host of other enhancements.
