First Look at 5 New Cards From Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Magic: The Gathering's Next Set

by Eric Apr 11,2025

While Magic: The Gathering's high-profile crossovers with franchises like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been grabbing headlines, the upcoming set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is poised to make a significant impact. This set brings us back to the beloved plane of Tarkir, and we're excited to offer an exclusive sneak peek at five cards that are likely to become staples at draft tables next month. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is currently available for preorder on Amazon.

Explore the gallery below to view all five cards, and continue reading for insights from Wizards of the Coast on their design and the overall theme of the set.

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

6 ImagesThese five cards form what's known as a "cycle," each sharing a common design theme across Magic's colors. Specifically, they are all low-cost, common-rarity creatures with abilities linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, and they also feature a mechanism to convert mana into a color from that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, “Three-color limited environments need quite a bit of mana fixing, at all rarities. We wanted to ensure that many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed numerous designs focused on solving mana issues. These creatures are unique because they allow you to build your board presence while simultaneously improving your mana base - unlike tapped lands, which only produce mana and can put you at a disadvantage.”

She notes, “These cards reflect the unique aspects of the clans since their last appearance. The Jeskai's action-oriented monks, the Temur's use of Whispers, the Sultai's Nagas as jungle protectors and avengers, the Mardu's military prowess with supporting roles (and the varied forms of dragons), and the Abzan's clerics working to regrow the lost kin trees.”

PlayOne critique of recent Magic sets has been their overuse of tropes or thematic gimmicks, even in revisits to established planes. However, *Dragonstorm* stands out with its straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges this feedback is valuable to Wizards of the Coast, stating, “The top-level pitch for Tarkir was set well before *Murders at Karlov Manor* and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, with Dragonstorms playing a crucial role in shaping our return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to do justice to this beloved plane from the start, striving to create an authentic and meaningful next chapter.”

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set scheduled for release in both physical and digital formats on April 11, and in-store prerelease events beginning on April 4.
