Naughty Dog's recent comments suggest the Last of Us video game series might be over. Read on to learn about the future of The Last of Us and Naughty Dog's current projects.
The Last of Us: No More Sequels?
Naughty Dog's Stance

The Last of Us Part II may be the final entry in the acclaimed post-apocalyptic zombie series. In a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann hinted at the series' conclusion, stating, "I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it." This statement casts doubt on the future of The Last of Us video games, as Naughty Dog shifts focus to its television adaptation.
Druckmann previously expressed his philosophy on sequels in a DICE Summit 2025 interview with IGN: He avoids thinking about sequels while developing the initial game, preferring to approach each project as potentially the last. This approach suggests that any future Last of Us ideas were fully explored within Part II.
While this strongly suggests no further game sequels, fans can still anticipate the release of The Last of Us Season 2 on April 13, 2025.
A New IP Emerges

Despite the potential end of the Last of Us game series, Naughty Dog is actively developing a new intellectual property (IP). Announced at The Game Awards 2024, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is slated for PlayStation 5. A short teaser trailer showcased its sci-fi setting. According to the game's official website, development began in 2020, promising a unique and ambitious narrative. Further details remain scarce.
The Cancellation of The Last of Us Online

The cancellation of The Last of Us Online paved the way for Intergalactic. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida, in a February 19, 2025 interview with the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, revealed that the online project was discontinued to prioritize Intergalactic's development. Yoshida cited advice from Bungie, highlighting the significant long-term commitment required for successful live-service games. Naughty Dog, recognizing the resource demands, opted to focus on their new single-player title.
Druckmann's comments, coupled with the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, indicate a potential end to the Last of Us video game franchise, at least for the foreseeable future. However, fans can look forward to the upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on April 3, 2025.
