11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their eagerly anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is drawing closer to its release date. In this latest reveal, the studio paused to honor one of its most celebrated creations: the wartime survival game This War of Mine, which catapulted the studio to international acclaim more than a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and despairing ambiance, The Alters takes a different approach, embracing a more spirited and frequently humorous storyline that focuses on the trials faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the stark contrast in tone, the developers stress a deep thematic link between the two games.
Although the settings and atmospheres of the games are markedly different, both are centered on the theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players must navigate the grim realities of a war-torn city, managing resources and facing daily challenges to keep their group of civilians alive. In contrast, The Alters frames survival as a frantic race against time, with players needing to continuously relocate their mobile base to escape the destructive path of a merciless sun that reduces everything to dust.
Both titles challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into perilous territories to gather essential resources. The primary distinction between the games is in their protagonists: This War of Mine puts players in charge of a group of diverse civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a team made up of alternate versions of the central character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass right from launch day.
