Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumor

by Ethan May 23,2025

According to a report by Insider Gaming, the extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe and originally codenamed Project Maverick has undergone a complete reboot. Initially conceived as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, the game's development took a significant turn after an internal review. Despite receiving positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management decided to shift most resources to Project Blackbird, also known as Far Cry 7. The final blow to the multiplayer component was the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The responsibility for the rebooted project has now been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its expertise in development support. Nearly the entire original development team has been reassigned to work on the next installment of the Far Cry series.

Insider Tom Henderson reported in mid-December 2024 that Far Cry 7 aims to immerse players in an atmosphere filled with tension and desperation, with time as the central adversary. The game's narrative will center around the protagonist's family being kidnapped by a mysterious cult involved in chilling experiments using hallucinogens on animals and children. Players must race against time to rescue their loved ones within a tight 72-hour in-game deadline, which translates to 24 real-time hours. This time constraint introduces a critical gameplay element, intensifying the urgency and pressure on players.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the dwindling time. This mechanic not only amplifies the urgency but also adds pressure, compelling players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is poised to offer a distinctive gaming experience where every second is precious, and every choice carries significant weight.
