PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse controls, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games. The precision offered by this setup is hard to match. However, some PC games are surprisingly better with controllers. Games emphasizing fast-paced movement or melee combat often benefit from a gamepad's intuitive controls. Similarly, many console-originating franchises, now ported to PC, retain a controller-centric feel.
While many PC releases strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, certain titles are undeniably enhanced by controllers. Reflex-based action and high-octane melee combat are prime examples. Several genres, especially those with console roots, are naturally suited to gamepad use.
The end of 2024 saw several high-profile releases, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force. While these generally perform well with keyboard and mouse, and arguably better than with a controller, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered might offer a slightly better experience with a gamepad, although the difference is minimal.
Several upcoming PC game releases in early 2025 show promise for superior controller play:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port following the Monster Hunter formula, ideally suited for controller use.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad controls; this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: The combat system closely mirrors its predecessor, which played better with a controller on PC.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A PS5 port to PC, typically optimized for controller use first, though keyboard and mouse will likely be functional.
A 2024 Soulslike title has also been added to this list (see below).
